The Minister of Labour has issued proposed amendments to the Employers Assessment Model under the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases (COID) Act and has invited public commentary.

Effectively, the proposal is to adopt 13 restructured classes with corresponding assessment tariff percentages. These will then be phased in, over a five-year period, in order to address discountings and loadings as may be applicable.

“Hence,” says John Botha: HR expert and COO of Global Business Solutions, “employers will be allocated a new rate but will receive a discount or loading in order to be able to phase in changes.”

Organisations need to familiarise themselves with the new proposed tariffs based on their category allocation and start to understand the potential cost impact.
